- Leonard Hoogenboom, 90, died May 22, 2009, in Goshen, after a short battle with cancer.
He was born Oct. 12, 1918, to Leendert and Archa Elzerman Hoogenboom.
He grew up and lived the greater portion of his life in Goshen working at the IXL cabinet factory, other carpentry jobs and the Railway Express Agency.
He served in the Army during WWII and met Eunice Dewey Hoogenboom while training in New York state. Eunice preceded him in death in March of 1990. He moved to South Carolina in 1959 and lived in Cayce, Columbia, and West Columbia. He retired from the Co-Lite Sign Company in 1980.
He remarried at age 72 in 1991 to Nel H Caton, who survives. They relocated to Goshen, where the majority of his brothers live, several years ago.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Sebastian, and in 1932 by his only sister Agnes (age 7). He also joins his brothers Arthur and Abraham in their heavenly home.
Surviving are his 4 brothers
He is survived by 2 sons, 2 daughters, nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home on S. Main Street in Goshen from 2 to 4 pm and 5 to 7 pm Tuesday. The service of glory to God will be at the funeral home at 7 pm following the visitation. Burial will be in West Columbia, SC, next to his first wife and the mother of his children.
He loved his heavenly Father and taught his children, and all who knew him by his example of faithful attendance and participation in the activities of his church. Recently, he attended the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Elkhart. The family recommends that any memorials be sent to this church at 2323 17th St, Elkhart, IN, 46517.
